Michael's Message

The end of the school year is here and this time is always one of reflection and celebration for what has been accomplished over the school year. I would like to say "thank you" to everyone who has contributed in some way, big or small, to making this year a hugely successful one for our students. Our staff has been remarkable and worked tirelessly this year. PTO and all of our parent volunteers have helped to support our staff's efforts in the classroom and after school as well. Our amazing staff and community of support makes the experience for our students here at Indian Valley special.

The end of the school year is also a time for transition and new beginnings. Thank you and good luck to Mrs. Moore and Ms. Chappell on their new beginnings - they will be greatly missed! We have hired some new staff this spring and I look forward to introducing them to you when we return from summer break.

August will also be a time of new beginnings as we welcome our new transitional kindergarteners and kindergartners and their families, and the many new families who are moving into the community. It will also be a time to build upon our strengths as a school and I look forward to sharing updates with you when we return in August. Until then, please know our school office will be closed for the summer starting June 13 and will re-open on July 31. Be sure to check your email for any summer updates.

Best of luck to our 5th graders and their families as they move on to middle school. You are ready and I know you will take all that you learned from Indian Valley with you as you take this next step in your educational journey. Thank you to our students, staff and parents for a wonderful 2024-25 school year and I hope you have a safe and memorable summer!

-Michael

From The Stacks with Ms. Scanlon

From the Stacks:

It’s summertime!!! For most kids that means lazy days, fun in the water, popsicles and NO homework!!! But just because it is summer it doesn’t mean your child should stop reading. Studies show that students lose over 2 months of reading proficiency over the summer gap. The best way to combat that is simple- READ EVERY DAY. Just 20 minutes a day is all it takes to help your child beat the summer slide. Here are 3 tips to help keep your child reading:

  • Provide easy access to books. Have a selection of favorite books available at home. Visit your public library- get your child their own library card. Ask the librarian for some suggestions. Let your child choose the books s/he wants to read. They are more likely to read a book that they chose themselves. Don’t limit your child to just books. Magazines, comic books, letters and even postcards will delight and challenge your child
  • Summer reading shouldn’t be so easy that kids get bored. Nor should it be so challenging that they give up on it. Try the 5 finger rule: have your child read a page from a potential book. Every time they come to a word they can’t read they put up a finger.

4-5 Fingers = Too Challenging
2-3 Fingers = JUST RIGHT
1-2 Fingers = Too Easy

  • Make reading interactive! As a general rule, it is good for kids to read things at their independent level and be read to at a higher level because it helps to build vocabulary and actually makes the listener a better reader. Learning and educational specialist Susan Schwartz says reading aloud is actually one of the best ways parents can help improve reading skills. “Never stop reading to your kids,” Schwartz says. “You should read to your children every day, especially during the summer. Not only is it a fun, immersive experience for your child, it’s also a learning one.” Your child should be reading out loud, too. If there are any younger children (or a family pet) around, it’s a great idea to have your child practice reading a storybook to them. You can also take turns reading pages with your child. When a child is reading independently, it’s good to discuss what they're reading. Kids will appreciate the interest, and it doubles as a way to monitor comprehension. Talk about the characters and the problems they are facing, and encourage your child to ask questions and reread tough parts with you. Consider reading the book at the same time as your child for a better conversation. (Child Mind Institute 11//6/23)

  • Participate in your public library's summer reading program. The game is on this summer at your library. The Contra Costa County Library’s 2025 summer literacy program is all about play! Whether you’re playing chess with a friend, working on a puzzle, or learning to code video games, play is one of the ways we learn best. The library is a great resource for you to level up your learning as well as your fun. From June 2 to August 2 the Library will champion Summer Reading as the summer of having fun and learning while you do it. Readers of all ages can visit ccclib.org/summer for more gaming ideas and challenges. Every reader who completes a passport is eligible for a free book and a chance to win prizes. Help Us Close the Gap for Our Schools

As the school year wraps up, we want to thank you for being part of a community that believes in strong public schools. Together, we've accomplished so much:
  • $535,000 funded art, music, and science lab for TK–5 students
  • $295,000 supported 12 electives and a librarian at our middle schools
  • $490,000 added 14 class sections and a fully staffed Wellness Center at Las Lomas
We also celebrated incredible milestones—over $201,000 from Read-a-Thon, $124,000 from Turn Up the Heat, $24,000 from Taste & Toast, and $51,000 from FORE! Education.

But we’re not there yet.

Despite these successes, WCEF is still behind our $1.6 million goal, and overall participation is down. On top of that, the failure of Measure T means our Acalanes Unified High School District (AUHSD) (which includes
Las Lomas) now faces $2 million in cuts—impacting class sizes, electives, and student support services.

If you supported Measure T or believe in protecting quality education, we’re asking families to consider a $130 donation—the same amount Measure T would have contributed per parcel. Every dollar brings us closer to bridging the gap and keeping our schools strong.
Give now at wcefk12.org/donate
or call (925) 933-WCEF to learn more.

Let’s finish strong—for our students, our teachers, and our schools.
With gratitude,
WCEF
